Significant Presence of the Occupational Therapy Department of PADA at the 14th Panhellenic Alzheimer’s Disease Conference and the 6th Mediterranean Conference on Neurodegenerative Diseases in Thessaloniki, February 13-16, 2025.
Warmest thanks to the President of the Scientific and Organizing Committee, Emeritus Professor of Neurology at the School of Medicine of AUTH, Ms. Magda Tsolaki, for the invitation to have our Department participate in the Conference.
Occupational Therapy, as a health profession, plays a crucial role in managing individuals with dementia, supporting their caregivers, and raising awareness and informing society—key areas that were highlighted through the speeches and poster presentations of our Department.
The conclusions of the study conducted on Greek drivers with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease, which was presented at the recent 14th Panhellenic Alzheimer’s Disease Conference in Thessaloniki, are discussed by Associate Professor Ioanna Giannoula Katsouri, President of the Department of Occupational Therapy at the School of Health and Welfare Sciences of the University of West Attica.
In an interview on Tania Mantouvalou’s radio show “104.9 Health Secrets,” she states that individuals diagnosed with these conditions tend to modify their driving behavior, avoiding challenging aspects of driving, such as nighttime driving, highways, or adverse weather conditions.
An interesting finding of the study, according to the professor, is that no accidents were reported among individuals with dementia. “This appears to be due to the crucial role played by family support and medical advice,” she notes.
